The Djerdap Gorge
(Iron Gate)
The most beautiful European gorge
The Djerdap Gorge is the longest (100km) and the largest gorge in Europe. It is also known as the Iron Gate. The Djerdap gorge is a composite, i.e. it consists of four gorges and three valley extensions. In part, the Small and Great Cauldron Danube is also the narrowest and deepest on its way to the Black Sea.
It is measured at a depth of 82 meters, which is one of the largest river depths on the planet. In the gorge there are various archaeological sites and cultural and historical monuments such as Lepenski vir, Golubac town, remains of Trajan’s bridge, Trajan’s tablet…
Trajan’s Board – Tabula Traiana
Historical monument on The Danube
Distance from Kladovo: 33 km upstream
Time distance: 29 min
Google Location
This Latin inscription is carved on a carved rock. It is 3.2 meters long and 1.8 meters wide. The symbols of this inscription are: an eagle with spread wings, two dolphins and a rose with six petals.
The inscription is dedicated to the Roman Emperor Trajan and is located on the “Roman road” on which Trajan built a bridge over the Danube.
With the construction of the Derdap hydroelectric power plant, the Roman road was flooded. From 1967 to 1969, Trajan’s tablet was cut from the original rock and placed in a rock 21.5 m above its original site, so that it was visible from the river.
There’s a Latin inscription on the board. Translation of the inscription:
“Emperor Caesar, son of the divine Nerve, Nerva Trajan Augustus, victor over the Germans, grand pontiff, fourth time appointed tribune, father of the fatherland, consul for the third time, carved the mountains and laid the beams of which this road was made.”

Trajan’s Bridge was a monumental building on the Danube River that was built on the orders of the Roman Emperor Trajan. The bridge was officially opened in 105 AD and was made with the aim of securing a crossing for the Roman army in its campaign to the Dacians. The length of the bridge was 1097 m.
The bridge was designed by the greatest architect of the time Apollodorus of Damascus. The bridge is one of the most important works of Roman construction. For about 1,000 years it was considered the longest bridge ever built in the world.
Small and Great kazan
these two gorges form the Kazan Gorge
The rocks that surround the Danube in this part of the Đerdap Gorge are over 300 meters high. The name “kazan” (cauldron) came about because of the numerous whirlpools that resemble a boiling river.
Kazan Gorge belongs to the Djerdap National Park.
Rocks over 300 meters high contribute to the impressive appearance of the canyon valley and the unreal beauty of the river.

The sculpture represents Decebalus, the last Dacian king who ruled from 87 to 106 AD. It was built in the period from 1994-2004. 12 sculptors worked on it. • The total cost of the works reached one million dollars
• The name Decebal means the strength of the Dacians

The monastery is first mentioned in sources from the fifteenth century. It was destroyed in the 18th century during the Russian-Turkish-Austrian wars. It is also known as hidden place or dark water. The name is associated with the river Mrakuna. The ruins were flooded by the construction of the Đerdap hydroelectric plant. It was rebuilt on the site of the former Balloon Station in 1995.

The great gate is 45m long, 23m wide and 30m deep. The gates can be reached by a well-maintained and marked path that starts from the Vratna monastery.

Rajac Wine Cellars
architectural complex of wine cellars
Rajac wineries are located on a hill known as White Hill, two kilometers from the village of Rajac, 80 km from Kladovo and 24 km from Negotin.
Pimnice is a unique architectural complex of wine cellars created in the first half of the 18th century. By the thirties of the last century, there were 365 of them. All the wine cellars were buried two meters underground so that the temperature would vary very little during the year.
They were created in the golden age in the 18th century, when the evil grape ravaged the French vineyards. The French were looking for wines similar to their own. In the mentioned period, this part of Serbia was very wealthy. In order to achieve high quality wine, the rule was that wine should not be mixed with village activities. Wine cellars were created outside the village as a place to store wine with impeccable hygiene. Every house in the village had its own cellar. In this region, the vines are warmed by the sun about 260 days a year, which gives the grapes a special sweetness.
